Laparascopic surgery
This is a minimally invasive approach to surgery. Laparoscopic procedures afford patients the benefits of smaller incisions, less pain, less bleeding, fewer heart, lung and wound complications and also shorter hospital stay.
Endoscopy
A technique in which an endoscope is used to examine an internal organ or tissue, it can be inserted into body openings or places where incisions have been done. The areas which can be examined by an endoscope include the gastrointestinal tract, the respiratory tract, ear (otoscope), urinary tract (cystoscopy), female reproductive tract(gynoscopy), and places like the knee when a small incision has been made.
Endoscopyis used for investigation or body organs and tracts, treatment e.g removal of a polyp, complete biopsies so as to confirm a diagnosis of cancer or other diseases and imaging of internal organs like the pancreas. A typical endoscope consists of a tube, light, lens, eyepiece and an additional channel.
Hernia
A hernia is a condition in which part of an organ is displaced and protrudes through the wall of the cavity containing it. The most common types of hernias include inguinal hernias, hiatal hernias, umbilical hernias and incisional hernias.
Surgery is the most common treatment for hernia
What causes a hernia?
Muscle weakness and strain which may be caused by constipation, severe coughing or sneezing, heavy weight lifting, pregnancy etc.
Symptoms of a hernia
The most common symptom of a hernia is a swelling or a bulge in the affected area which you can touch and feel, for an inguinal hernia, it gets bigger when you stand.
For babies you may only be able to feel the hernia when they are crying.
In inguinal hernias, pain in the lower abdomen when coughing, bending or lifting, weakness, a burning or aching at the site of a bulge.
Hiatal hernias
This occurs when part of your stomach protrudes into the chest through the diaphragm; it is most common in patients that are over 50 years. It is characterized by heartburns, chest pain and difficulty in swallowing.
Diagnosis of hernia
In case of inguinal hernia, the doctor checks for a bulge in the abdomen or groin that gets bigger when you stand or cough.
In case of a hiatal hernia, the doctor may use endoscopy or barium x-ray.
