The pregnancy health record is the main medical record of your pregnancy. It is provided by the hospital and it is your responsibility to carry and show it. The record has been designed to involve you in discussing your health status and care plan throughout your pregnancy, birth and labor.

Prenatal screening and diagnostics test

Routine Ultrasound scan during pregnancy

An ultrasound scan during pregnancy is a painless procedure that uses high frequency sound waves to produce a two dimensional black and white image. This image can help identify possible problems with your pregnancy or baby.

Immunization during pregnancy

Having various immunizations before, during and after pregnancy is recommended for best health outcomes for you and your baby. It will provide protection from some infections and serious illnesses for both you and your baby.

Family planning

Family planning benefits the health of women and well being of families throughout the world. Using contraception helps to control unwanted pregnancies, space child births, protect against STDs and many other health benefits.

What is contraception?

This is one of the ways used by females for family planning to prevent unplanned pregnancies.

Types

Male condoms

The male condom is a form of contraception for men. It also protects against sexually transmissible infections (STIs)

Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill (COC pill)

This is a form of contraception for women

Intra Uterine Device (IUD)

An IUD is a small device that fits inside your womb.

Tubal ligation

TL is a permanent contraception or sterilization for women.

What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the muscle tissue of the uterus. Fibroids can range in number and size from a single growth to multiple growths, and from very small to large.

Symptoms of fibroids

  • Mild to severe cramping and pain
  • Heavier bleeding, sometimes with blood clots
  • Longer or more frequent menstruation
  • Spotting or bleeding between periods

Who gets fibroids?

  • They usually occur between the ages of 30 and 40
  • They grow more quickly and appear at a younger age in African/black women
  • Having a family member with fibroids increases a woman’s risk
  • Being overweight or obese and having high blood pressure also may increase the risk

Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases (PID)

An untreated STD can cause a pelvic inflammatory disease which is a serious condition in women. 1 in 18 women with history of PID experiences difficulty in getting pregnant. You can prevent PID by protecting yourself.

What is PID?

PID is an infection of a woman’s reproductive organs. It is a complication often caused by some STD like gonorrhoea.

How do I know I have PID?

  • Pain in your lower abdomen
  • Fever
  • An unusual discharge with a bad smell from your vagina
  • Pain or bleeding during sexual intercourse
  • Burning sensation when passing urine

PID complications

  • Inflammation of fallopian tubes
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Infertility
